The Piston Poppers hold an annual Kids Kontest to introduce young people
to the sport of control line flying. Owning your own plane or
having prior experience is not necessary. All planes and equipment
are provided at the Kontest, with instructors on hand. Kids are
encouraged to help in setting up before and afterward for their flight.
They are judged on takeoff, flying, stunts, and landing. But most
of all on how much FUN and sportsmanship they show. Judges are
picked from anyone standing around. The top three place finishers get
prizes, with the rest getting a framed certificate and congratulations.
This is a FUN event for all with the judges having as much fun as the
kids. Kids Kontest 2003 July 06, 2003 The morning started out overcast and calm, but by noon the sun and the wind came out for the rest of the day. It wasn't windy enough to prevent flying, but just challenging for some. By about 10:30 AM, people started showing up ready to fly. We had 16 kids with ages ranging from about 5 to 12 years old. Keith Sandberg and his crew briefed the contestants and judges on the "rules" and the scoring system. The judges were picked from parents and interested bystanders. The kids all got 2 flights each with each score added for the total. Competition was very close with second place decided by a fly-off. All of the competitors received plaques and a round of applause. Afterward a raffle was held with all the kids winning prizes donated by local hobby shops. For awhile, it looked like Christmas morning with all the kids and their prizes everywhere. Seeing the kids and their smiles made it all worthwhile for everyone. Many thanks to everyone who made this even possible. Jim Tomniczak from Hobbytown in Brooklyn Park, Brian Chun from Hub Hobby in Little Canada, and Dan Ring from Hobbytown in Minnetonka. Thank you for your support!!! Also, don't forget the ground crew and instructors Keith Sandberg, Steve Scott, Jeff Lange, Kelvin Heath, and Glen Peterson. Thanks also to Bob Cheney and Jeff Lange for cutting the grass and setting up the field. 2003 Top
